Five Simple Ways to Style a Button-Up Shirt

The classic button-up shirt is hands-down the most versatile piece in my wardrobe. There are infinite ways to style it, but here are the ones I wear the most. Sometimes simplest is best, especially when you’re in a rush & want to look (& feel) pulled together without much effort.

Untucked

I know this one probably seems super obvious, but there are many ways to take the same shirt, style it untucked, & still have it look fresh. Try switching up the bottoms: combine with tapered trousers for a more tailored feel, a pencil or mini skirt when you're feeling sassy, or wide-leg pants for a floaty, artistic look.

You can also play around with texture, going with the same fabric on top & bottom for a minimalistic style or mixing it up for something that feels both pulled together & unique. Try mixing something light (like cotton, linen or silk) with something heavier (wool or denim). Some combinations I adore are a silk top with vintage jeans, a cotton top with wool trousers, or an oversized chambray shirt with linen pants.

Tied at the Waist

Despite what society has tried to ingrain in us, this look truly works for any body shape or size. It defines the waist, emphasizing (or creating) curves when paired with high-waisted bottoms & skirts. It also works over a slip dress, adding another look to your outfit repertoire. If you have a top you love that doesn't quite float over your belly & hips in a way that feels good for you, this is another way your can style it (as is the next option).

Tucked Into a Skirt

Out of all the looks, this one often feels the most classic to me, as it's how my ancestors have dressed throughout the centuries. There's a reason it's stuck around so long- it looks good no matter who you are. My curves are something I love about my body, so I love that I can play with different pieces to highlight them. But, no matter your shape or size, this look can work for you. The key is playing around with the proportions to create a silhouette that you feel sparkly in! Tucking your shirt into a skirt is a great way to create an hourglass shape with a floaty bottom, voluminous sleeves, & nipped-in waist or emphasize your figure with confidence in tighter fitting pieces like a knit pencil skirt & silk button-up. You can either fully tuck the shirt in or leave it half undone for a more casual look, depending on how you’re feeling that day.

Remember: it’s not about how you’ve been told you should look, what matters most is that you FEEL amazing in your clothing.

As a Dress

From lounging around the house to going out for drinks, this is hands-down the simplest way to wear a button-up. The trick is to make sure the fit is very oversized. While this is simple, it's anything but boring, offers plenty of fancy-pants styling opportunities, from layering with cozy oversized knits to fun tights & tall boots. You can also wear bike shorts under it if you want a little extra coverage/thigh rub protection.

To dress it up for going out, play around with your hair & make-up. I love big hair & a bright red lip, or a giant top-knot & smoky eye.

Plus-sized peeps- I know how hard it can be to find one that fits like this, so I recommend checking here, here, & here. I will also always do my best to carry them in my store - promise.

Half Undone

I adore this cheeky & stylish way to wear a button-up. It looks tailored yet unique, with the top half buttoned up to just below the bra & the rest left open. Paired with high-waisted bottoms (can you tell those are my favourite kind of bottoms?), your body is almost entirely covered, yet this look feels deeply sensual.
